Under the supervision of the terminal manager and direction of Apprentice Program Coordinator, an Apprentice Driver Trainer is responsible for training newly hired and inexperienced drivers how to safely and properly operate company equipment. The Trainer also performs the duties of Commercial Truck Driver, such as operate a diesel-powered tractor-trailer combination vehicle, both interstate and intrastate, with a capacity of at least 26,001 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) to load, transport, deliver and unload materials, including bulk or palletized products, or materials in liquid, loose, or packaged form.
Mentor, develop and evaluate skills necessary for the safe and efficient operation of equipment by spending personalized time with an Apprentice Commercial Driver. The ability to use strong interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy is critical. Every aspect of the training is evaluated daily and weekly. Completed evaluation forms are to be turned in timely for assessment by the Apprentice Program Coordinator.
The evaluation forms must be descriptive and provide constructive criticism of the Apprentice’s progress. The technical aspect of the Apprentice’s driving techniques are evaluated and discussed with them. Positive and negative reinforcement is expected to be provided verbally and noted on the evaluation forms.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Encourage, monitor and evaluate Apprentice performance, including but not limited to: pre-trip methods, time management skills, load securement and emergency procedures
- Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities
- Instruct and monitor Apprentices in the use of learning materials and equipment
- Use relevant technology to support instruction
- Provide Apprentice with appropriate feedback regarding performance and development
- Document accurate and complete records of Apprentice progress and development
- Assist in the selection of Apprentices
- Perform all duties of Commercial Driver, including but not limited to: transport commodities, complete vehicle safety inspections, maintain vehicle cleanliness, and report accidents and incidents
- Comply with organizational policies and procedures and all applicable local, state, and federal rules and regulations
- Be available and rested in order to accept assignments, which includes nights, weekends and holidays
- Contact Dispatch department to verify load assignment
- Accept assignment of scheduled loads for pickup and delivery
- Be prepared for unexpected overnight assignments (up to 3 days of personal items)
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections on tractor-trailer unit
- Record any defects on the Driver’s Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR), both minor and major
- Maintain truck in safe operating condition, according to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR)
- Possess proper endorsements and site-specific credentials
- Track and manage time according to FMCSR’s Hours of Service; report errors and violations to E-log manager
- Load and unload product into trailer and designated facilities using correct procedures and following customer standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Maintain contact with dispatch to report all delays, assignment complete and confirm next assignment
- Adhere to grooming standards and dress code, to include wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and respirator
- Maintain electronic driver logs (manual logs when necessary) according to FMCSR
- Complete company forms as required and obtaining shipper and receiver authorizations as required; submit to payroll daily
- Contribute to positive relations by fostering an environment of cooperation and promoting customer and employee satisfaction
- Notify terminal manager of updates, recertification or problems regarding their license and DOT physical, as well as all citations, inspections, incidents, accidents and near-misses
- Maintain contact with manager to advise of problems or concerns
- Other reasonable duties as assigned
This position has no supervisory responsibilities. An Apprentice Driver Trainer may assign day-to-day responsibilities to Apprentices. Often provides information to a supervisor or updates the company on the Apprentices’ progress in meetings or through regular email contact or reports. Should a conflict arise, must work with team members to solve the conflict quickly and effectively.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Maintain a current Class A Commercial Drivers’ License with required endorsements
- Maintain a valid Department of Transportation physical
- Must be qualified to operate a combination vehicle as a driver in compliance with FMCSA
- Ability to operate a manual 10-speed configuration
- Ability to operate tractor-trailer in adverse terrain and extreme weather conditions
- Ability to use strong interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
- Must be able to be insured under the company’s vehicle insurance policy

- Understand functionality of equipment and recognize deficiencies
- Must be available for work when hours are available, according to FMCSA’s hours of service regulations
- Ability to work varying hours and schedules; occasionally staying overnight with short notice
- Proficient in performing tasks in rapid succession, handling stressful situations, making quick decisions and reacting
- Ability to drive in traffic and apply defensive driving tactics
- Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written or verbal form
- Ability to apply general rules to specific problems
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- 90 days of tenure with CTI or subsidiary preferred
- Internal candidates must be recommended by the current supervisor
- Previous instructor or mentor experience strongly preferred
- Minimum one (1) year of verifiable related experience as a Class A Commercial Driver within the previous three (3) years (less experience will be considered on an individual basis, and may require an extended training period)
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred
PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires the ability to crawl on hands and knees to open bottom hatches on underside of trailer; occasionally lift, carry, pull, push and/or move up to 70 pounds. The ability to sit, drive and stay awake for long periods of time.
This position requires ability to frequently stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, reach with arms and hands, grip, speak, hear, see, climb and/or balance, bend, kneel, squat or crawl, use legs and feet. This position requires constant climbing of stairs and/or ladders, working at elevations of 14 feet above the ground, bending over, opening and closing hatches, shifting gears. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Ability to speak, read, write, and interpret documents in English such as safety rules and regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and complete company, federal and state forms. Ability to communicate information in verbal and written form, as well as the ability to listen to and understand information.
This position is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, toxic and/or caustic chemicals or substances, extreme weather conditions, vibration, and equipment under pressure. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock. The noise level is usually very loud.
