Knapp Center for Childhood Development
The Knapp Center is a well-established, autism treatment center, growing over the past 10 years to employ over 100 staff, and earning awards for clinical quality in providing evidenced-based treatment to children diagnosed with autism. The Knapp Center is located in Boardman, OH in Windham Professional Court.
There are many children diagnosed with ASD in need of therapy services and therefore, the Knapp Center is looking to welcome additional professionals such as yourself, who are seeking a career that is stable, rewarding and that provides advancement opportunities!
Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) teach children ages 2-22 (age range depends on the treatment program you join). Some of the skills you’ll be teaching the children pertain to improving their ability to communicate with others, acquiring developmentally appropriate attending, academic, and social and leisure skills.
We provide the training! We provide an opportunity for you to progress through our intensive training program (100+hrs) to learn more about the science of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and how to use ABA to teach new skills and reduce behaviors that are inconducive to learning. “ABA is considered an evidence-based best practice treatment by the US Surgeon General and by the American Psychological Association. “Evidence based” means that ABA has passed scientific tests of its usefulness, quality, and effectiveness.” The Knapp Center utilized evidence-based treatment so that children can reach their optimal potential.
Below is a brief description of some of our treatment programs.
Initial Steps – This program is an on-site early intervention program designed for young children with autism ages 1-6 years. RBTs typically provide therapy in a 1:1 format but allow for children to have opportunities for group learning/socialization with peers during calendar/circle-time, E-Learning, art, gross motor, and music classes.
Enrichment – This program is designed for children with autism ages 5-7 years old. Children in this program have demonstrated significant progress in treatment, and are thus, projected to be discharged into mainstream education at a public or private school within the next 1-2 years. This program is designed to resemble a typical classroom. Children are taught how to learn in group instruction (even though RBTs are still 1:1 in this program) by fading the proximity and assistance of the RBT.
STEPS – The Knapp Center STEPS program utilizes the evidenced based practice of applied behavior analysis (ABA), combined with social skills groups and cognitive behavior therapy, to promote psychological, behavioral, educational, vocational, and social development. Patients, ranging in age from 8-18, receive treatment in both one-on-one and group formats.
ABA Outreach – RBTs provide the same therapy that they would provide onsite, except that the therapy is provided in the child’s home, school, daycare or community. There are many little ones (early intervention age 1-5) who’s parents are looking for them to begin therapy with an RBT in their home. It’s a lot of fun providing therapy in the home, because then you get to share the knowledge you’ve acquired through your training at the Knapp Center, with the parent, in order for them to utilize ABA strategies with their child.
