Major Duties

Operates a full-service coffee shop, preparing and serving the full range of coffee beverages and other specialty non-alcoholic drinks. Performs tasks with several steps or sequences of tasks such as setting up food service counters and side service stands with hot and cold food and beverages, including desserts and condiments. Prepares and serves simple food items. Operates coffee shop machinery to include commercial espresso machine, etc. Assists customers in the selection and purchase of specialty coffee and frozen fruit beverages, and whole bean sales. Provides quality beverages, such as expresso drinks, smoothies, Coffee of the Week, Whole Bean and food products consistent with established recipe and presentation standards. Uses suggestive selling techniques to sell associated products. Records sales, takes customer payments for goods. Operates a cash register, balances cash drawer at the end of the day, responsible for own change fund. Completes prescribed training. Stocks coffee bar. Properly cleans dishwasher, any associated appliances inside and out, and maintains customer service area and equipment in a clean and appealing manner. Performs preventative maintenance on equipment according to established checklists and schedules. Follows store policies and procedures for operational flow. Follows established standards for merchandising, stocking, rotating, and storing all products. Maintain clean and sanitary work area, utensils, equipment and coffee bar. Keeps records of quantities of beverages and other goods dispensed and submits requirement for re-stocking to supervisor. Receives and checks quantity and description of stock.


Skill to perform tasks with several steps and use judgment in the performance of sequential tasks; skill to serve uniform individual portions; skilled in various phases of food service operations. Ability to operate a cash register; perform simple arithmetic; perform work according to established safety guidelines; ability to read instructions, follow oral and written instructions are required. Must be able to successfully complete and maintain food safety/sanitation certification, and/or ServSafe trainer certification, as applicable. This is required in accordance with the Marine Corps Orders and Naval Preventative Medicine Manual policies and guidance for cleanliness and sanitation standards.

Receives assignments in oral or written form. Routine work is performed with general instructions; special circumstances occurring periodically require complete and specific instructions. The supervisor periodically checks to see that work is done on time and according to instructions. Responsible for the proper use and cleaning of equipment, safety practices, personal hygiene and conformance with sanitation requirements. Accountable for receipts and inventory and change fund.

Work involves light to moderate physical effort such as continuous standing, walking, frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. Lifts and carries objects up to 45 lbs independently and objects over 45 lbs with assistance. May be required to perform heavy work such as scouring and scrubbing equipment/floors, pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing and delivering supplies.

Work areas are often uncomfortably warm and noisy. Workers are exposed to minor cuts, bruises, burns, scalds and the possibility of slipping on wet floors. Some workers are exposed to extreme temperatures of hot kitchens, walk-in refrigerators and freezing units.
