Assistant Director of Campus Recreation – Challenge Course

The primary function of the Assistant Director of Special Events/Student Development is to collaborate with the Sr. Associate Director of Campus Recreation and all Campus Recreation personnel in development/implementation/oversight of programs, activities, and staff events that contribute to the well being of all students and the UCA Community. Job Duties and Responsibilities

A vital component of this position is a demonstrated ability to work autonomously with initiative, critical and creative thinking; as well as a strong commitment to collaboration, programming, student development, and customer service. The Assistant Director of Special Events and Student Development also oversees programs designed to engage all Campus Recreation student workers in departmental training’s ensuring standardization and consistency of policies and procedures across all areas. Demonstrates a commitment to a diverse workforce. Manages administrative activities and reports. Collaborates with campus partners to increase the participation and diversity of Campus Recreation/Group Fitness programs and participants. Meet budget goals, monitor and enforce internal controls. This position is a full-time, twelve-month, non-exempt professional staff member with the Department of Campus Recreation which is a department in the Division of Student Services.

Required Education and/or Experience

Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in recreation administration, sport management, leisure studies, higher education, Kinesiology, or comparable degree • Minimum two years’ experience working in a campus recreation environment or related field (graduate assistant experience is acceptable) • Experience in program development/implementation • Good management and organizational skills with a commitment to student development is necessary • Demonstrated ability to recruit, hire, audition, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate student part time staff • Ability to become First Aid/CPR/AED certified within 60 days of employment • Must be a self-starter with strong and effective oral, written, and computer skills • Experience recruiting, interviewing, auditioning, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating student employees • Ability to work well in a diverse environment • Demonstrated interpersonal, presentation, written and verbal communication skills • Demonstrated Microsoft Office competency • Leadership and supervisory abilities • Ability to write concise, logical reports • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing policies and procedures • Ability to work as part of a professional team and collaborate effectively with colleagues • Analytical skills to identify problems, assess alternatives, and render consistent and logical decisions • Successful completion of background check prior to employment

Preferred Education and/or Experience

• Master’s degree in recreation administration, sport management, leisure studies, higher education, kinesiology, or comparable degree • Two years of full-time work experience with programming and student development • 2 years minimum teaching/managing Group Fitness classes/instructors. Prior experience in staff development and management, as well as, leading groups in project management • Experience with management and personnel software such as, but not limited to Facility Management Software, Fusion, Sub-it Up, Blackboard, and Banner • Experience in training; developing/delivering presentation content/materials; writing reports, proposals, professional correspondence, manuals, etc. • Certified Instructor for First Aid, CPR, AED, and Blood borne Pathogen training • Ability to work independently • Ability to thrive in an environment that values high expectations, accountability, balanced lifestyle and dedication to risk management • The ability to plan, promote and evaluate a wide range of recreation services programs and events for the UCA community • Knowledge and experience in budget planning and fiscal management • An understanding of student development theory and demonstrated success in implementing recreation and group fitness programs to a culturally diverse population • The successful candidate will promote and cultivate an environment that values inclusiveness and diversity, and engage in evidence-based decision-making.
