    Summary

    About the position:
    This position will be assigned to the JBSA Lackland Fitness Center.

    This is a regular part-time category position with guaranteed 20 hours per week, may work up to 40 hrs/week. Employees appointed to a regular category position are eligible for benefits.

    Responsibilities

    The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of duties and responsibilities in support of the day-to-day operation of the Fitness Centers. Leads fitness center staff. Responsible for distributing and balancing the workload among personnel of the unit, in accordance with established work flow, ensuring timely accomplishment of assigned work, and ensuring that each employee has enough work to keep busy. Stays in touch with the status and progress of work, making day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities, obtaining assistance from the supervisor on problems that may arise, such as backlogs which cannot be disposed of promptly. Instruct personnel in specific tasks and job techniques and makes on-the-job training to new personnel in accordance with established procedures and practices. Maintain a current knowledge and answers questions of other personnel on procedures, policies, directives, etc., and obtains needed information from supervisor on problems that arise. Checks work in progress or spot checks work not requiring review to see that supervisor’s instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods and deadlines have been met. Resolves simple informal complaints of personnel and refers others to supervisor. Sets up gymnasiums and playing fields for sports events, tournaments, and practice games. Conducts fitness assessment tests and formulates individual fitness improvement programs for patrons. Serves as desk attendant ensuring only authorized patrons use the facility and equipment. Greets visitors, answers telephones, makes reservations for classes or use of equipment and facilities, and provides information on scheduled events and classes. Provides assistance and basic instruction to patrons in the proper use of exercise machines and equipment. Teaches group exercise classes, i.e. Step aerobics, Pilates, etc. as needed. Tests equipment for safe operation. Issues sports equipment and completes required documentation for transaction. Inspects returned equipment noting damage. Inspects all equipment and facilities according to established standards and local fire and safety procedures. Reports damaged exercise equipment to supervisor. Conducts cleaning of machines as necessary. Operates point of sale system; receives payment and issues change for services. Prepares cashier reports and makes daily deposits to central cashier. Performs opening and closing procedures of facilities IAW written guidelines. Assists in setting up and cleaning of facilities, grounds and equipment for programs and special functions. May be required to operate a government vehicle to include light truck, sedan, golf cart, etc. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifying Experience:

    Must have experience which provides a working familiarity with the routines and procedures following in group activities or programs: and experience of recreational activities and equipment, rules and procedures in a recreation program activity which has involved recreation work in the area of sports or fitness. Must demonstrate experience in utilization and operation of basic fitness equipment. Must have basic computer experience. Experience in proper cash handling procedures and to operate a cash register is desirable. Personal Trainer or Group Exercise Instructor certifications are desirable.

    Education

    Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution.

    FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
