We have a great opportunity for the right person to join our Team as a Safety Specialist. This position can be located out of our Medford, Portland or Eugene office, with travel throughout the U.S. to client locations. We will consider candidates in Missouri, Arkansas and Georgia due to the vicinity of Client locations in these geographical areas.
The Safety Specialist is responsible for helping Ward Insurance Agency, Inc. attract, secure, and retain business by providing professional, timely, and knowledgeable human loss prevention and safety services. The role operates as a value-add position to support the Producers’ prospecting and servicing goals. The Safety Specialist will also be responsible for developing and maintaining internal resources and systems for the continual improvement of the Department and Risk Services Team.
Although this position will be based out of one of Ward Insurance Agency’s three Oregon locations, applicants in the following locations are eligible for consideration to perform the role remotely due to Client locations: Kansas City, Missouri, Little Rock, Arkansas, and Atlanta, Georgia.
This position reports directly to Ward Insurance Agency’s President and indirectly to the Director of Risk Services relating to the Department Goals for the Risk Services Team.
Regular office hours will be Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, but will vary when traveling and may extend beyond regular office hours, including weekend travel on occasion.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Client Servicing Tasks (65%)
- Perform OSHA Safety Compliance Audit with Ward Clients
- Assist clients with the development and implementation of new safety programs
- Evaluate safety program updates for effectiveness and maintenance
- Conduct on-site safety hazard identification walkthroughs
- Support and evaluate clients’ hazard mitigation efforts
- Create professional quality reports for client use and recordkeeping
- Provide safety training to client team members
- Assist with client responses to federal/state agency citations and carrier loss control recommendations
- Partner with carrier loss control representatives to facilitate communication and loss prevention efforts
- Analyze workers’ compensation claims data for trend identification and mitigation
- Support Producers’ prospecting efforts through marketing support and proposal involvement
Internal Program Development and maintenance (35%)
- Develop occupational and general liability safety templates, trainings, and informational resources
- Input activities and records into company information database
- Maintain departmental materials and resource library
- Participate in Risk Services Team development efforts, including the creation of marketing and client outreach material
- Stay abreast of latest regulatory changes and industry best practices
- Assist with the maintenance of safety emailing list
- Contribute to quarterly safety newsletter and monthly social media posts
- Support the continual improvement of Ward Insurance’s Company Safety Program
Travel: the position can require up to 30% travel annually, throughout the United States.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) in a safety-related field from four-year college or university preferred; equivalent combination of education and/or experience considered. Examples of safety-related fields are: Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health and Safety, Safety Management, Safety Engineering, Human Factors, Ergonomics, Public Health.
5 years’ experience in a safety-related position required; 2+ years must be in the wood products industry. Examples of safety-related positions are: Safety Manager/Coordinator/Technician, Safety Compliance Officer/Inspector, Safety Consultant, Health and Safety Trainer or Educator, Insurance Loss Control Consultant.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Coursework in statistics is a plus.
Budget management experience is a plus.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
One or more of the following certifications are preferred: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP), Safety Management Specialist (SMS), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM)
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Proficiency in technical development of marketing and training materials. Proficiency in conducting video conferencing and virtual meetings. Proficiency in basic data entry and management.
Video marketing and training experience is a plus.

When working within an office environment utilizing office equipment, the noise level is usually moderate. During client visits, the noise level will range from moderate to very loud. Travel by car and air will add to the diverse work environment.
Position will work closely with Ward Producers and support staff, carrier representatives, and clients and prospects of all levels (CEO to hourly workers). Safety Specialist should maintain contacts, or at least familiarity, with local and national safety related vendors.
