YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids
The Group Exercise Instructor leads and/or demonstrates general fitness classes. This position requires face-to-face leadership and may involve early morning, evening, and weekend responsibilities.
- Creates, maintains, and leads exercise routines
- Demonstrates correct posture alignment
- Follows safety standards
- Calculates target heart rates using the age adjusted method
- Follows “Perceived Exertion” methods of monitoring exercise intensity
- Provides feedback on exercise adherence
- Develops fitness regimens to member needs
- Supports members in fitness routines
- Demonstrates proper exercise form
- Implements Character Development in programs
- Maintains all areas in clean, presentable fashion
- Handles member complaints
- Stays current with advances in the health and wellness field
Performs any other functions deemed necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids
$17.78/hr-$21.95/hr; Part Time; Non Exempt

High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED); general knowledge of exercise training with one year of experience as an instructor; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Ability to interact with people of all ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles. YMCA experience preferred.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to speak effectively before groups of volunteers, members, and staff. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply common sense understanding in order to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
